Getting the support needed

Liam, a dad-of-two from Southampton, was on his way out on the 19th January 2015; it started out as just a normal morning for him. He’d left his fiancée’s house, but she called him back as he’d forgotten his phone charger. Liam went back into the house to get the charger before getting onto his moped and setting off.

Whilst driving along an A road in Southampton, Liam was unfortunately involved in a road traffic accident. He has limited memory of the accident and its aftermath; however, he remembers a car coming across his path.

Liam was correctly proceeding, but the third party driver, travelling in the opposite direction, took a right turn and caused a collision, hitting Liam and his moped.

The next thing Liam remembers is trying to stand up after the accident and being unable to do so. He then removed his own helmet as he could feel he was bleeding and he screamed. Liam doesn’t then remember the ambulance arriving to take him to Southampton Hospital.

Liam remembers part of the journey to hospital, and that going over speed bumps was causing pain to his back: he knew he had suffered a serious injury.

At the hospital, Liam’s family arrived and stayed with him whilst his facial injury was stitched and he was given pain relief, before going for a scan to reveal the injuries he had suffered.

Various CT scans and x-rays revealed that Liam had 5 unstable vertebrae fractures in his thoracic spine, multiple facial lacerations, a head injury and multiple soft tissue injuries on areas of impact.

A month after his accident, Liam left hospital after being on bed rest, wanting to recover further at home. He was discharged to his fiancée’s house to continue bed rest. After a few weeks at home, Liam became more mobile and could shuffle up and down the stairs, and by the end of March he was able to walk slightly more and didn’t need to lie down as much during the day.

During his recovery, Liam’s fiancée and parents provided a lot of support with everyday things such as making his food, helping him get changed and providing his medication.

Unfortunately, Liam was unable to return to work after the accident, as he had worked as a warehouse operative and his role involved a lot of lifting and carrying. His family life was also affected as he was unable to get onto the floor and play with his children, and sometimes felt like he couldn’t look after them properly.

We handled Liam’s case and ensured he got the support he needed during his recovery period. In October of this year, Liam’s case settled for £120,000. Liam’s compensation will hopefully provide him with some financial security for the immediate future and help him move forward from his accident.

Liam gave some feedback on how his case was handled: “I think Fletchers is full of great friendly staff that are more than happy to help out where they can. Staff are easy to get along with and strive to make sure you understand what’s going on and have constant updates”.

Katelyn Williams, the solicitor within our Serious Injury department who handled Liam’s case, passed on her comments:

It was a pleasure to run a case for someone such as Liam – a very polite young man who was always very grateful for our help. I am delighted with the result obtained for him and wish him and his family all the best for the future.
